Formal acceptance as
a student in the educational program of the College is required
for all students desiring to obtain financial assistance.
Title IV-HEA
Programs
Each
student applying for Title IV Federal financial assistance must
complete the "Free Application for Federal Student
Aid" which is available from the Admissions Office.
Other information may be required, such as prior-year income tax
returns and other financial statements as necessary. In
addition, a student must request that a Federal Financial Aid
Transcript be forwarded directly to Mid-America College from all
colleges previously attended, even if no prior Federal financial
assistance has ever been received.
Each student must
maintain satisfactory academic progress while enrolled in the
College in order to receive, or continue to receive, financial
assistance from the various Federal financial aid programs.
If a student who
is receiving Federal financial assistance withdraws from studies
prior to their anticipated date of graduation, a refund of
unearned tuition may be due. Unearned tuition must be
refunded to the federal agency providing the financial
assistance and not to the student.
PELL Grants
A PELL
Grant is an award designed to help an undergraduate pay for his
or her education after high school. To receive a PELL
Grant, a student must be enrolled on at least a half-time basis
and be making satisfactory academic progress. Repayment of
educational grants of this nature is not required.
The grant award
is determined principally by criteria established by the
Department of Education and is based upon income earned during
the previous tax year. PELL Grant applications are available in
the Admissions Office or from local high school or college
counselors.
Student Loans
The
Federal Stafford Loan is a low interest loan
made to an eligible student to assist in paying for his or her
education. A loan of this nature is a debt and must be
repaid. There are two types of Stafford loans. The
Subsidized Stafford Loan permits a six-month
"grace" period following completion of studies and
graduation from the College before the required repayment plan
begins. The Unsubsidized Stafford Loan allows, by
comparison, a "grace" period of only two months
following the first loan disbursement. With approval,
however, repayment may be deferred until sixty days after
graduation.
The Federal "PLUS" Loan is available to the parents of a
dependent student. Repayment begins two months following
the first loan disbursement, with no deferment period currently
available.
For additional
information regarding the Stafford Loan or the
Federal "PLUS" Loan, contact the Admissions
Office of the College.

of Financial Assistance
Scholarships
A limited number of
scholarships are available to students of funeral service.
Most
scholarships are awarded through the American Board of Funeral
Service Education only after a student has been enrolled for at
least one academic quarter. Information regarding
scholarships may be obtained from the Admissions Office or by
contacting the American Board of Funeral Service Education; 38
Florida Avenue; Portland, Maine 04103.
Students are also
encouraged to check with their state funeral service
professional associations and state licensing boards for other
scholarships and grants that might be available.
GI Bill
A student desiring to attend Mid-America College under
provisions of one of the Veterans Administration programs
applies for admission exactly as does a non-veteran.
However, he or she must first make
application for training directly to the VA by submitting Form
22-1990-Application for Education Benefits and proof of
military service. Acceptable proof of military service is
Form DD214-Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active
Duty or a Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE).
Once eligibility has been
determined, the student will receive a Certificate of
Eligibility from the VA. The student should mail a copy of
the Certificate of Eligibility directly to the College.
Upon receipt, the College will complete and submit required
enrollment certification to the VA.
A veteran is encouraged to
contact his or her VA counselor to determine eligibility for
educational benefits. The College recommends the
completion of all required applications at least forty-five (45)
days before enrollment to insure timely receipt of benefits.
State Vocational Rehabilitation Programs
A student desiring to
attend Mid-America College under the provisions of a state
vocational rehabilitation program should contact his or her local
Vocational Rehabilitation Office directly for assistance.
Individualized Tuition Payment Plans
Many students effectively use individualized tuition payment
plans to meet their tuition obligations. With College
approval, regular installment payments can be made during the
quarter, with the final installment due prior to final
examinations at the end of the quarter.
